Charity of the Month June 2019 - ASSIST Sheffield & South Yorkshire Refugee Law And Justice

20 June 2019

Each month, tickets bought through our website help raise funds for a charity or social cause. Funds raised in June (10% of our booking fee and any added donations), will be going to Migration Matters Festival nominated charities; ASSIST Sheffield and South Yorkshire Refugee Law And Justice

ASSIST Sheffield is a community-led charity which supports some of the most vulnerable people living in Sheffield - people who have been unsuccessful in their applications for asylum and as a result have been made destitute.  Many of them have escaped the unimaginable horrors of war, violence and persecution, but simply telling the truth about the conditions they have fled sadly isn't always enough. About half of the people who apply for asylum in the UK do not get recognition as a refugee. Without refugee status, asylum seekers are not allowed to work. Once their initial application for asylum has been turned down many are left with no right to housing, benefits or other vital support. They're left homeless, destitute and vulnerable on the streets of our city. This is where ASSIST comes in; supporting asylum seekers who have been made destitute by a system which fails to protect them at a time of extreme vulnerability.

South Yorkshire Refugee Law And Justice (SYRLJ) is a locally led and run, non-political and non-denominational group of volunteers. Its members include students, local people and refugees working and training together to improve access to justice for individual asylum seekers.

The non-profit organisation trains volunteers aiming to integrate the practical experience of the asylum process with academic knowledge and legal skills. Its objective is to help refugees collate evidence to support fresh claims and appeals by researching social, political and other relevant conditions in their country of origin. Additionally, it gives advice and helps with asylum claims where asylum seekers cannot get legal representation.

SYRLJ has accreditation from the Office of the Immigration Services Commissioner and it is working with local and regional organisations which support, advice and campaign for refugees and asylum seekers. The organisation’s services cover the areas of Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham, and Sheffield.
