Workshop: Graft your own fruit tree!
Dorothy Fox Education Centre, Botanical Gardens, Sheffield
Sunday, 8 Mar 2020
10:30am to 2:00pm
Join the Sheffield Fruit Trees team to try your hand at grafting: the magical process we use to create our trees.
Fruit trees as a general rule don't breed true; if you plant an apple seed you'll probably end up with something not as tasty as the original apple! To get around this, we, and all commercial nurseries, use a vegetative technique of cloning called grafting. This allows us to control the fruit that the tree will give and to some extent, the tree's vigour and disease-resistance.
In this three and a half hour workshop you will:
- learn about why we graft fruit trees and the various aspects of the whip & tongue technique;
- be guided through the techniques needed to safely use a knife and secateurs;
- practice grafting various apple and pear varieties;
- pot and take home a tree you've grafted (worth over £20) armed with detailed advice on how to plant and care for it.
Only ten places per workshop - advance booking strongly recommended.
