Soundpost Presents: Sheffield Carol Workshop with Ian Russell

Underbank School Rooms, Sheffield

Saturday, 9 Dec 2017
10:00am to 3:00pm

Join Ian Russell and learn the singing parts of eight favourite carols from village traditions near Sheffield. No special expertise is required, just enthusiasm for the carols and a willingness to join in. All the carols will be pitched to fall within the range of normal voices (as in the pubs where many of these traditions thrive). Instrumentalists will be able to learn to play the accompaniments in parts (string/woodwind), based on the manuscripts used by village carol bands. These have been specially prepared and edited by Ian Russell, and are taken from The Sheffield Book of Village Carols.

Ian Russell is an emeritus professor at the University of Aberdeen. Since 1969 he has conducted extensive fieldwork into singing traditions in the English Pennines, especially Christmas carolling – and has written and broadcast on the subject. He is an experienced leader of carol workshops and the director/founder of the Festival of Village Carols.
